The 2020 Farmers Co-Op has been awarded a $250,000 grant through the USDA's Local Food Promotion Program (LFPP). The funding will support critical infrastructure development, including cold storage facilities, processing equipment, and improved distribution capabilities.
Strengthening Our Infrastructure
As our cooperative has grown, so has the need for proper infrastructure. This grant addresses key bottlenecks that have limited our ability to serve farmers and buyers effectively.
"Infrastructure is the backbone of a functional food system," explained cooperative leadership. "This investment will help us store, process, and distribute produce more efficiently—benefiting farmers with less waste and buyers with higher quality products."
How the Funds Will Be Used
Cold Storage ($100,000)
The largest portion of the grant will fund cold storage capacity at our regional aggregation sites. Proper cold storage:
- Extends produce shelf life
- Reduces post-harvest losses
- Enables larger-volume buyer contracts
- Improves product quality at delivery
Processing Equipment ($80,000)
Investment in basic processing equipment will allow us to offer value-added services:
- Washing and packing stations
- Minimal processing (trimming, cutting)
- Pre-packaging for retail and foodservice
- Quality control equipment
Distribution Infrastructure ($50,000)
Improved distribution infrastructure includes:
- Refrigerated transport capacity
- Route optimization technology
- Delivery tracking systems
- Packaging and logistics supplies
Training and Implementation ($20,000)
A portion of funds will support:
- Staff training on new equipment
- Food safety protocol development
- Operational procedure documentation
- Member education on new capabilities
